Globalization has enabled many professionals to look for places to achieve their goals outside their home country. For example, the number of Japanese football players or coaches has been dramatically increasing since 2000, reaching about 400 per year in 2012. However, some of them are not able to deliver satisfactory performances because of language barriers. Therefore, there is a need to improve the spoken English skills of Japanese football players or coaches who want to work internationally. Here, genre-based approach (GBA) is proposed as one potentially effective method in this teaching context. GBA, characterized by its use of authentic teaching materials developed from real-life situations and incorporation of real tasks the into teaching curriculum, has long been adopted as a teaching framework in Adults Migrant English Program (AMEP) supported by Australian Government.
西条は、アメリカとオーストラリアサッカーリーグに選手として計3年間(2003、2009、2011)在籍しつつ、他の日本人選手・コーチたちの留学生活の実態調査をした経験を有する。その経過をふまえ、オーストラリアNSW州にサッカー留学をした日本人選手にアンケートを実施した。結果、回答者の９割が「言葉に苦労した」と答えた (西条, 2014)。
昨今、海外サッカー留学生は、年間約400名にものぼる(辻, 2012)。海外の高等教育機関への留学支援体制の構築とその研究成果は、国内でもいくつか報告されている(高浜, 2007;大山, 2013)が、アカデミック以外の留学形態に対する支援体制構築は急務である。Football English Session (FES)は、英語圏へのサッカーコーチング留学を見据えている日本人を対象とした「英語力向上プログラム」である。
スポーツコーチングなど、実用的な分野における第二言語運用能力の育成には、従来のような文法・語法の解説を中心とした教材ではなく、現実の言語活動をより忠実に反映しているオーセンティックマテリアルの使用が提案されている
(Goh & Burns, 2012)。FESでは、こうしたオーセンティックマテリアルを使用する英語教授法Genre-based pedagogy (GBP)を用いることで、サッカー留学希望者の英語スピーキング能力を、向上させることを目的としている。
